Erik and Sarah
About Us
This handsome prince traversed the eastern
seaboard until he met up with his princess last
February. Born and raised in East Brunswick, New
Jersey, he attended Rutger's Prep and went on to
pursue his passion in Hotel & Restaurant
Management at Johnson and Wales University,
Providence Rhode Island. His hotel jobs landed him
in Newport, Rhode Island; Charlotte, North Carolina;
and Lafayette, Louisiana where he opened the
region's first Fairfield Inn. A job at Marriott
headquarters brought him to Maryland, where he
has lived since. He loves to travel and some of his
favorite properties include Skytop Lodge located in
the Poconos; Point Clear Resort in Mobile,
Alabama; and the Camelback Inn and Resort in
Scottsdale, Arizona. Most likely you will catch him
exercising with his personal trainer, Emma Jean the
Siberian Husky.
It was the first snowfall of the season in
Colorado Springs and opening day of
fox-trapping season, when little Sarah came
into the world. Traversing the world with her
Navy family was a way of life until, at age
twelve, the Hempel family settled in Olivet,
Michigan. She went on to college at the
beacon of Liberty, known as Hilldale College.
After graduation she moved to Maryland in
order to further her experience in art, which
you can read more about at her website,
www.HempelStudios.com
After many years of living in Maryland,
sculpting, Irish set dancing and enjoying the
company of cats, she met the love of her life
and the two were married October 8th, 2005.

How We Met
Pastor Ron was playing matchmaker. We first caught each
other's awkward smiles in the aisles of Good Shepherd on
February 22, 2004. We pretty much hit it off right away! The
day we met, Erik invited Sarah to brunch at Firestone's,
downtown Frederick. We ate there every Sunday after church
for nearly a year. Erik was working second shift, so most of
our early dates were brunch or an afternoon picnic. One day
that really stands out in both of our minds is the venture
downtown to catch the Verrochio exhibit at the National
Gallery. Sarah swooned at the sight of Verrochio's David and
Erik was enchanted in the 14th century Italian painting room.
Before long we headed up to New Jersey and met the Irani
family. From there, we hopped a short train to catch the
Byzantium exhibit at the MET in New York. Then in July we
headed to Chicago to attend the wedding of a dear friend.
From there we traveled to Michigan to meet the Hempel clan
and the Michigan Iranis. Erik began his proposal planning
after that trip! Read about our engagement!
