I tried to reach Grace through her email address that she had posted in Sarah’s blog site.
After several days without an answer, I quietly asked Sarah about Grace’s email. She
offered a different one. I wrote to her and she responded. She said that it would not be a
problem to get the time off. I booked a flight for her to Washington National and was able to
book a hotel room at the Residence Inn at Pentagon City for two rooms. With the Metro
subway line connecting the two locations, it offered an easy connection for Grace to get to
the hotel.

I then asked Dan to help me. At first, I thought he would be working that day in Silver Spring.
I emailed him and asked if he would be willing to come down to DC and video record my
engagement. My digital camera has a video recording option. While not the sharpest, it
would do the job. He said that he was off that day, but it was not a problem to come down to
DC.

Having her father’s blessing for this marriage was very important to Sarah. I wanted this to
be a surprise, so I had to have a cover story. At first, I was going to use my cousin, Cyrus,
and his close proximity to her parent’s home. The idea was to see if he could drop
something off for me that they could deliver to Maryland when they visited in October. I
would, however, arrive and talk to them. I then realized that I actually did have something at
Cy’s house that needed to be delivered. Back in June, I had bought a case of beer for Sarah’
s brother, Buck. He had enjoyed the beer from a company called the Michigan Brewing
Company. I had accidentally left it at his house when I left. With this, I asked Sarah if it was
okay to have Cyrus stop by her parent’s home and drop off the beer. She said it would be
no problem. I booked my flight with Independence Air from Dulles to Lansing, the rental car
and reserved a room at the SpringHill Suites in Lansing.
His story: The preparation for the engagement
began back in early August. The planning started in
late July. I went to
Zaruba and Zaruba jewelry
designers and brought my maternal grandmother
engagement ring. Douglas Zaruba said he could
create a ring inspired from it without a problem. He
said it would be approximately 6-8 weeks to design it
and have it ready. So, I signed the papers and gave
him the ring.

At first, I wanted Sarah to have a memorable
moment. Her engagement should be a moment that
she recalls with happiness. So, my plan was to have
a moment that was with friends and with recorded
video for those who could not share in her
excitement. I planned on having her friend, Grace,
from college flown up to DC to share in the day. I
also planned to have the moment video recorded.
This is where my friend, Dan, came in.
