1. What's your definition of local for this challenge?
The challenge is personal, for you and for your family, but not private. Every action we make personally has a ripple effect throughout our community and our world. Define your challenge and what it means to you.
Example: I want to grow in awareness where my meals come from and who grows or raises the ingredients. Also, I want to slow down and enjoy the preparation, take time to give thanks, eat slowly and savor every bite.
2. What exemptions will you claim?
There are some things that are a part of your everyday life that will be impossible to source locally. Will you be drinking coffee during this month? What will you do about spices? In many areas, local grains are hard to find. What will you do if you can't find them?
Example: My exemptions are coffee, tea, salt & pepper, rice, olive oil, coconut oil, and spices that are already in my pantry. When dining out, I will dine at locally owned establishments. Also, because I so value hospitality, I will not refuse food offered in such a spirit.
3. What is your personal goal for the month?
You don't have to set your goal at eating every meal locally -- while that is the ideal, we want to be realistic here. You could set a goal of having each dinner with local products, having one family meal a week, or even hosting one weekend picnic with local foods during the month.
Example: Ideally, I'd like for 100% of my food to come from local sources, but I will give myself some grace, so I employ a 80/20 rule. My personal goal for this month is to find a local source for goat products. I also want to participate in the Eat Local Challenge- Frederick picnic potluck at the end of the month.
The challenge is to raise our awareness of our foodshed. In October, 2008 we will be selecting foods grown, raised or produced within a radius of 100 miles of the city of Frederick. Our area is rich with agricultural history that is still active today. Print out the Challenge Form and join us!
